While the 10K (6.2 mile) format has become one of the sport’s most common races, the benefits offered by the Southwest Half Marathon & 10K are anything but ordinary. 2017 will mark the fourth year that the event has enabled runners who train for a shorter format to enjoy the benefits of a fast, flat course that winds its way through the beautifully green Cook County Forest Preserves. Chip timing is provided along with commemorative medals for all finishers.
$200,000 for Charity
Since 2008, the Southwest Half Marathon has raised more than $200,000 for area charities including the South West Special Recreation Association, American Cancer Society for Prostate Cancer and Research, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Garden in Palos Heights. This year’s race will benefit the South West Special Recreation Association (SWSRA). A 2010 Governor’s Hometown Award and several years of recognition by the Chicago Area Runner’s Association (CARA) are additional reasons to expect a full field.
